How to Evaluate Crude Oil Suppliers for International Trade
A buyer guide to crude oil specifications, cargo sourcing, counterparty verification, inspections, pricing and RFQs.
Crude oil sourcing starts with a defined grade and a verifiable chain of supply. A generic offer for millions of barrels without credible origin, specifications, logistics and contracting authority should not be treated as confirmed availability.
Define grade and quality
Specify the crude stream or benchmark, API gravity, sulfur content, contaminants, assay information, acceptable quality tolerances, volume and delivery window. A reference to Brent or WTI pricing does not establish the actual cargo quality.
Verify the legal seller
Confirm the legal entity, registration, beneficial ownership where appropriate, authority to sell, title or allocation evidence, and relevant trading history. Check claimed producers, terminals, vessels and agents through independently obtained contact channels.
Map the logistics
Set loading terminal and destination, parcel size, laycan, vessel acceptance, demurrage arrangements, Incoterm or equivalent contract allocation, insurance and independent quantity and quality inspection.
Compare commercial terms
Ask how the price formula references its benchmark, quotation period, differential, currency, payment timeline and adjustments. Normalize competing offers to a comparable landed-cost basis before selecting suppliers.
Check legal and compliance risks
Screen counterparties, vessels, origin, beneficial owners, banks and intermediaries for applicable sanctions and export controls. Confirm customs documentation and destination import rules with qualified advisers.
Publish a sourcing RFQ
State the crude grade, quantity, delivery conditions, inspection requirements and commercial timetable in an RFQ. Review relevant profiles and negotiate only after independent verification.
